地下3階、地上12階建てという美術館としては特異なビル型の建築に、2019年までは市役所が入っていたという多機能な千葉市美術館。カフェやミュージアムショップがあり、建物のエントランスとなる1階では子どもたちが気ままに親と待ち合わせ。
The Citizen’s Atelier, located on the 3rd floor of Chiba City Museum of Art, is a workshop offering drawing sessions and other artistic activities. On this day, a group of university students gathered in this space.
千葉市美術館の4階にある市民アトリエは、デッサン会や作品制作など、工作室としてリーズナブルな価格で利用することができるオープンなスペース。この日は、それぞれ異なる大学に所属し、学年もバラバラの学生たちが集まってミーティングをしていた。
Takai, a second-year student at Chiba Senior High School, one of the most prestigious schools in Chiba Prefecture, was quietly studying at a table in the hallway on the 3rd floor. The atmosphere here is different from that of a prep school and Takai can study in calm.
4階の廊下に並ぶテーブルで黙々と自習していたのは、千葉県内有数の進学校、千葉高等学校に通う2年生の髙井さん。ここは塾とは違う空気感で落ち着いて勉強ができるという。
Elisa is active as a textile designer in Japan and abroad. She came from Kanagawa Prefecture to visit Chiba City Museum of Art after a friend recommended it for its interesting architecture. Sitting in the free space on the 3rd floor, she takes notes of her impressions from the exhibitions and the architecture.
テキスタイルデザイナーとして国内外で活動するエリサさん。千葉市美術館の建築が面白いと友人からおすすめされて神奈川県から足を運んだ。4階のフリースペースに座って展示や建築についての印象を忘れないようにメモ。
The Bijutsu Library is located on the 3rd floor. Children are free to browse the collection of 4,500 books: picture books, art magazines and collections of art works. This collection was curated as an introduction to art for children—adults are also welcome to the library!
4階にある図書館「びじゅつライブラリー」。子どもが初めてアートと出会う場所というコンセプトのもと選書された4500冊もの美術に関する本。ユニークな絵本をはじめ、美術雑誌や作品集などもあるので、大人も十分に楽しめる。
On the 10th floor, there is the director’s office, as well as an office and meeting space for curators and public relations staff. On this day, the next exhibition was being discussed.z
10階には、学芸員や広報、事務などのスタッフが作業をする事務室やミーティングスペースがある。この日も次の企画展のための打ち合わせが行われていた。
Chiba City Museum of Art
In July 2020, Chiba City Museum of Art was renovated into a facility that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, including a permanent exhibition room of Ukiyo-e and Edo paintings, as well as an atelier where children can create together. The ground floor used to be a bank built in 1927 in a neo-renaissance style.
2020年7月、浮世絵や江戸絵画の常設展示室やアーティストがつくった空間で子どもたちが一緒に活動・制作できるアトリエなど、幅広い年齢層が親しめる施設にリニューアル。1階にある「さや堂」は昭和2年に建てられた旧川崎銀行千葉支店。戦禍を免れて現存した数少ない歴史的建造物のひとつで、ネオ・ルネッサンス様式の建物。
Community Interactions
The Minna no Library (Library for Everyone, in Japanese) on the 3rd floor displays book reviews by local junior high school students. Chiba City Museum of Art actively interacts with the local community through work-study programs, in cooperation with local schools and universities.
4階にある図書館「びじゅつライブラリー」で見かけるポップは、地元の中学生によるもの。 千葉市美術館は周辺の学校や大学と連携した職場体験学習なども含め、地域との交流を積極的に行い、深い関係性づくりに努めている。

The museum’s spirit of experimentation is reflected in its space, which is open to various functions and experiments, while maintaining ties with the local community.

Creating Safe Spaces
The Bijutsu Library is always lively, with small children running around barefoot, as seen on pages 106 and 107. SAP 001, which is used here, has the ability to decompose and eliminate airborne viruses and odour-causing bacteria, creating a space where children can play and read safely. In addition, the low-concentration ozone released also deodorizes any odours that have permeated into carpets.

Highest Air Purification
The corridor on the ground floor, which serves as the entrance to the museum, is particularly busy with people coming and going, making the powerful LEAF 720 air purifier a perfect fit.
